St. Augustine is only moderately salt tolerant, so on the island, in Flour Bluff, along the bayfront and anywhere the southeast wind carries spray off the water, it will brown on the exposed side no matter how well it is fed. We test soil salinity and irrigation water before we recommend it, and where the numbers are high we will point you at seashore paspalum instead rather than sell you a pallet that is going to disappoint you by August. Soil type changes the install. On deep coastal sand we work organic matter into the top four inches so the profile can actually hold water and nutrients, and we irrigate lighter and more often during establishment because a deep soak on sand is gone before the roots see it. On inland clay we amend with compost and sand for drainage and grade harder, because standing water rots St. Augustine faster than drought does. Same grass, opposite problems, ten minutes apart. The install itself has to be tight. St. Augustine spreads only by above-ground stolons and is never sold as seed, so gaps do not close politely. We lay staggered running-bond seams with no daylight between slabs, roll with a water-filled roller so the stolons make real soil contact, and program three short cycles a day for ten days before tapering. Then we come back inside 30 days to pull a corner and check root knit, and to look at the hot strip by the driveway where chinch bugs always start. Pallets run roughly 450 to 500 square feet, cut to order and installed within about a day of harvest.
