Corpus Christi Elite Sod & Turf provides professional storm & hurricane lawn recovery in Corpus Christi, TX for residential and commercial properties across the Coastal Bend. Storm and hurricane lawn recovery is a different job from ordinary sod work, because after a surge or a tropical system the problem in your yard is chemistry and debris rather than grass. We test the soil first, build a leaching irrigation schedule, apply gypsum where the sodium numbers call for it, and only then talk about replacing turf — fertilizing a salt-inundated lawn makes it worse. Coastal Bend property owners learned a great deal about this in 2017, when Hurricane Harvey came ashore near Rockport and Port Aransas. Saltwater inundation does three things at once. It loads the soil with sodium and total salts, which raises the osmotic pressure of the soil solution so roots cannot draw water even when the ground is wet. Sodium also destroys soil structure in clay soils, collapsing pore space so the ground seals and stops draining. And the flood leaves behind silt, sand and debris that can bury or smother whatever grass survived. Each of those needs a different response, and applying fertilizer to any of them is the one thing guaranteed not to help. Our recovery sequence starts with testing, because you need to know whether you have a salinity problem, a sodium problem, or both. Total salts get flushed with repeated deep fresh-water irrigation to move them below the root zone, which needs the soil to actually drain — so on clay we often have to fix structure before leaching will do anything. Sodium gets displaced with gypsum, which supplies calcium to knock sodium off the soil particles so the leaching water can carry it away. That is a real chemical process with a real timeline, not a same-week fix. Debris and silt come off mechanically. A thin silt layer can sometimes be tilled in. A thick one has to be removed, because it buries the crowns and changes the grade. We also check the irrigation system, since surge and flooding routinely fill valve boxes with sand, snap laterals and short out controllers, and there is no point replanting into a system that will not run. Then we make an honest call on the turf. Some lawns come back with leaching and patience, especially Bermuda and paspalum, which tolerate salt reasonably well. St. Augustine often does not. Where replacement is the right answer we will usually recommend switching the exposed areas to seashore paspalum so the next storm is less expensive than this one. We also handle downed-tree cleanup around lawn areas, regrading where surge scoured the yard, and drainage improvements that make the property less vulnerable next time. Insurance documentation photographs and written scopes are available on request.
