It concentrates where turf runs hottest and driest — along the driveway, against a south-facing curb, next to a brick wall radiating heat all afternoon. Populations build fast in coastal heat and humidity, and a patch the size of a doormat in June can take out a third of a front yard by August. On this coast there is an extra wrinkle: chinch bug damage and salt-spray burn look similar from the porch, and the treatment for one does nothing for the other, so getting the diagnosis right saves real money. The confirmation test costs nothing and you can run it yourself. Cut both ends out of a coffee can, push it a couple of inches into the turf at the edge of the damaged area where grass is still partly green, fill it with water and wait a few minutes. Chinch bugs float, and small dark insects with white wing markings on the surface are your answer. Treating them is the easy half. What matters is why they chose your lawn, because chinch bugs favour thatch, a mow height that is too low and hot dry edges — all three fixable. We treat, correct the conditions, and check the same strip on the follow-up rather than assuming it worked. They are not the only thing out here. White grubs chew roots until sod lifts off the soil like a rug, usually announcing themselves as a raccoon problem first. Fall armyworms can strip a lawn in two days and cross a yard as a visible front. Sod webworms leave notched blades and small green pellets. Mole crickets tunnel and loosen the surface, and they are especially at home in coastal sand. Fire ants are their own program. Disease is the other half of the diagnosis. Large patch appears on St. Augustine in cool damp weather as expanding circles with an orange margin, and our humidity makes it a regular visitor. Take-all root rot hits high-pH lawns and thins turf while roots go short and dark. Gray leaf spot follows heavy nitrogen in humid weather.
