Corpus Christi Elite Sod & Turf provides professional coastal tree & shrub planting in Corpus Christi, TX for residential and commercial properties across the Coastal Bend. Coastal tree and shrub planting is how you make the rest of the yard work, because a windbreak on the southeast side cuts salt spray and evaporation across everything behind it. We plant live oak, Texas sabal palm, yaupon holly, wax myrtle, oleander, lantana, esperanza, Texas sage and Gulf muhly alongside sod work, so the whole landscape establishes together instead of getting dug up again in two years. Species choice on this coast is not decorative, it is defensive. The prevailing southeast wind carries salt inland, and plants that are perfectly happy in San Antonio will burn on the exposed side here within a season. The list above is on it because those species genuinely tolerate salt-laden air, wind and our alkaline soil. Wax myrtle and yaupon holly make excellent dense screens and take the wind without complaint. Live oak is the classic Coastal Bend shade tree and grows into that sculpted, leaning form for a reason — it is being pruned by the wind, and that is a feature rather than a defect. Sabal palm handles salt and standing water better than most palms, though like all palms it gives you a silhouette rather than useful shade, so plant it for effect and plant something with a canopy if you want the yard cooler. On the inland side of the city the palette widens considerably, and we will make use of it. Installation technique matters as much as selection, and more so in sand. We dig the hole two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the ball itself, because a hole dug deep and backfilled loose lets a tree settle and buries the root flare, which is the leading cause of slow tree death and happens constantly on professionally installed jobs. We set the root flare at or slightly above finished grade, score circling roots on container stock so they do not girdle the trunk in five years, and backfill with the native soil we removed rather than a pit of imported compost — in clay that becomes a bathtub, and in sand it creates a nutrient island the roots never leave. Then three inches of mulch in a wide ring, pulled back off the trunk. Staking is where coastal work differs. On an exposed site a newly planted tree genuinely needs support against onshore wind while it roots, so we stake where the site requires it, use broad flexible ties rather than wire through hose, and — the step everyone forgets — come back to remove the straps before they grow into the trunk. Watering instructions come written down, because a new tree wants deep infrequent soaking on a different schedule from a new lawn, and running both off the same zone leaves one of them unhappy.
